Whitby Fire Department's Neighbourhood Visit

Recently in my neighbourhood of Whitby Shores, we had the pleasure of being visited by our dedicated local Fire Department Fire Fighter Staff. The fire trucks and staff visiting were not here to knock down our doors to put out a fire, but were here to inform us on how to prevent them. Each of us received a visit and an envelope with a letter from Kent MacCarl, our Whitby Fire Chief and five pamphlets on Fire Prevention. The Fire Chief's message in his letter stated "The majority of Whitby's fires are taking place in the home and are most often caused by human behavior!"

The five pamphlets included the following: Candle Safety (important during the upcoming holiday season); Carbon Monoxide Safety (also important due to the colder nights we are having and people using space heaters etc. to keep warm or warming up the car in the mornings while in your attached garage); Working Smoke Alarms - IT'S THE LAW ( make sure yours is in working order and has working back up batteries in place); Kitchen Fire Safety ( we start cooking more indoors at this time of the year); and Whitby's Fire Statistics.

Did you know the 50% of fires occur between 2 PM and 9 PM peaking between 4 PM and 6 PM?

Also did you know that the 5 causes of fire are from cooking, smoking, appliances, electrical, and heating equipment?

Most injuries and deaths from fire occur in our homes.

Please check out the following Whitby Fire web site for more information http://www.town.whitby.on.ca/index.php?Q=046K01V0

In the future we will talk more about the information in the pamphlets.

Until next time.
