Tomato Time
Here's a pic of the latest batch of tomatoes to come out of the garden. I figure there's about 30 pounds there. They need a few days in the house to ripen up fully. Then they'll be boiled, mashed, strained and boiled down again to join the other 15 litres of sauce on our canning shelf in the basement. And there are still a couple hundred out in the garden...
In the pic you will notice the cuttings in the clear pitcher. They are sweet potato cuttings. Only took three days to start rooting. I'll plant them in pots and overwinter them as house plants. In the late spring I'll plant them out into some cold frames. But that's only if I actually find some sweet potatoes in the ground when I get around to digging them up (they are still growing strong now). If they don't have any, I can't see bothering with them again. I'll let you know what I find.

Hi Pacres,
That's an amazing yield off 8 plants! Can you ever really have too many tomatoes with salsa, ketchup, sauce, dried tomatoes etc to make? We still haven't made our ketchup yet. Another thing I like to do is see how long I can make the last few tomatoes last. I usually eat the last one in early December. I'm going for Christmas this year! If I ever get my little green house finshed and moved over the tomato plant it is sitting next to.
PS. thanks for the tip on the coffee shop

You are in the same boat as I am. We have harvested near 100 lbs of tomatoes from our 8 plants. We've been making tomato sauce, salsa, bruschetta and stocking it away for the winter.I've also been giving away lots to some grateful neighbors. I think perhaps 4 plants will be plenty next year.
