Tune in Tomorrow
Tomorrow around 12:30 you can catch me on Rogers cable 10 doing a short segment on my organic garden. I'll be in the studio for a short interview after the taped segment.
This segment was taped several weeks ago and a lot has changed in the garden since then. We've harvested most of the summer crops now; moved the greenhouse and cold frames over some of the beds; planted garlic and potatoes for next year and planted a row of asparagus roots I lifted from the road side. We have about 200lbs of veggies sitting on our porch that we harvested from the free garden plots down the road (thanks to AB for the help). With the cold frames in use we should be able to harvest food out of the garden for another couple months with any luck.

Hi Kristen,
It's just a matter of time before you're harvesting some spears. Could take 3-5 years before they really take off though. Once they're established you could have them for decades!
Enjoy!

Thanks, I'll look into that

Hi Duane,
I planted some asparagus seeds this past spring, and the little asparagus plants appear to be doing well. It is my understanding that it will take about 3 years for them to 'mature' to a point where I can start harvesting them. It's a long wait, but worth it! Hope my harvest is as good as yours someday!

Moe, you can also buy them online from most seed retailers, they come as small roots and take a year or two to mature, but do well after that..

Hi Moe,
I found them along the side of a country road. There are many of them growing wild as the birds have spread the seeds around. I saw some at Stricklands in the summer but they weren't very mature. I've asked at other places and apparently they sell out very quickly in the spring so try and get out early next year.
Good luck!

Hey Duane, where did you find the asparagus roots, I've been trying to find them for a long time and can't even locate a nursery in Durham that will sell them?
