Sweet!

For the first time ever I've grown Sweet Potatoes!  I got a cutting off of Bob Garthson who operates a CSA north of Cobourg last summer.  I over wintered it in the house and rooted 3 more cuttings off the plant by the time they were ready to plant in June.  Sweet Potatoes like it hot so I put them into a cold frame and left it on all summer; propped open for the warmer months.  It wasn't a very large crop but there should be enough for 5 or 6 meals.

I've brought in about 8 cuttings this year as I hope to plant 2 or 3 rows next year.  They root very easily by sticking them in a jar of water in front of a window. Bob had his planted in a large patch covered with black plastic to keep the soil nice and warm.  I'm not too keen on using plastic in the garden as I don't consider it very sustainable so I'll probably go with cold frames again.

Here is the whole crop sitting on a cold frame shortly after being dug up.
