Late Harvest

Growing our own food is pretty much our most important strategy for sustainable living.  With 6 of us we go through a lot of food in a week, I'd estimate 70-80 pounds.  The more we grow ourselves the less packaging we bring into the house; there are a lot of food miles saved and we know exactly what's in it and what isn't.  Not only are we eating sustainable and healthy food but it also saves us a lot of cash since food is also our biggest expense.  I love it how we meet so many of life's goals by living sustainably!

I still have a quite a few things out in the garden under cold frames and other barriers.  I like to leave veggies out in the garden for as long as possible so we can harvest as needed and not have to worry about inside storage so much.  I also don't like to dig for too long at any one time so I stretch the harvesting out over weeks and months, partly to prevent a sore back but mostly because I bore easily! I'll have to get them all dug in the next few weeks as they won't survive the prolonged deep freeze that is bound to be coming soon enough.

Today I dug up some carrots that were protected by straw covered with clear plastic film and some potatoes that were covered with steel roof sheeting I salvaged.    Guess what we're having for dinner tonight?
