The greasy road less traveled

Well, just an update on the Veg-mobile. We've been running on Veggie oil for over a week now and everything is hunky-dory. Feels very cool to no longer be polluting as much. The garage, where we store our oil now smells like a fast food restaurant. We have to heat the oil a little to facilitate it's filtering and pumping in the cold weather and the resultant odor has everyone hungry all the time. If anyone is smoking dope within a block of my house I must be driving them nuts. But it's been fun. Tremendously so. Suzanne and I went on an oil gathering foray yesterday to the greasy dumpster of a restaurant where our good friend Greg is head chef. We lugged along our portable pump and took away gallons and gallons of excess, waste vegetable oil that would've been dumped somewhere. It will now be reused. Burned off and returning only the carbon that those plants took out of the atmosphere when they were growing. That's called CO2 neutral and it's a very good thing. I'm finding this whole exercise to be very much like when I stayed at a friends solar powered cottage for a week. He showed me the little dial doo-hickey that told you when your solar panels were actually gathering free power from the sun. He told me, with a knowing grin on his face, that I would end up spending hours looking at that little dial and smiling my face off. Feeling really cool about being off the grid. It's true, and I did just that. I felt exactly the same way the first time I pumped a tank full of my own home filtered veggie oil. Wonderful, independent and goofily happy. We don't do these things, sometimes, because we look around and see that hardly anyone else is doing it. We worry that therefore it must be wrong, or at least misguided. When in fact just the opposite is very often true. As Frost said, 'I took the one less traveled by' and wound up in a very good place. I'll keep you posted on this greasy journey.
