Vegging My Ride

Taking the vehicle in tomorrow for it's conversion. No, this is not some kind of automotive religious rite, something involving cutting the tip off the tailpipe or anything. I'm going to start running my diesel VW Beetle on what is known in the eco-community as WVO or Waste Vegetable Oil. Amazing, but true. My car will drastically reduce it's carbon footprint and will no longer belch sooty diesel fumes. Instead it will leave a trail of hungry people in it's wake as it putts along leaving the pleasant odor of french fries behind. We already have all the goodies in place for oil collection. Most restaurants are more than happy to have us cart away their old oil as they have to pay for it to be disposed of otherwise. I'm very happy and giddily excited about never having to stop at a gas station again. Not having to be part of the whole oil dependency thing. One foot firmly out of the loop. Yee-haw!
If you're at all interested in this stuff, we're not as whacked as you might imagine. There are thousands of folks doing this, especially south of the border where the warmer climates make it even easier to do. A good place to start off is Plant Drive. From there you can leap all over the internet. Veg your ride.

Good on you sir!
Just read that GM is spending $100 million to develop 100 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The good news is that they are being made in Oshawa. The bad news is that it works out to $1 million bucks a car. The lease would kill me even on a 48 month job. Congrats on your commitment to environment.

I very much admire your conviction Neil. I did a lot of reading about WVO and even bought a diesel vehicle. Time hasn't permitted me to take the final plunge (or perhaps lack of conviction). It would be great if you could keep a journal of your experience with it. I'm sure you could make it funny and compelling. Cheers
