Munroe Doctrine fails again
The USA seems to feel it is quite safe (generally) from the horrors of the outside world. Other than that terrible day in September, the US has remained fairly safe from direct outside attack on the lower 48. The US is absolutely determined that any attack on it's homeland is met with a ferocious and determined defense. Even though Pearl Harbour was in Hawaii and not a direct mainland attack, look how that ended up with Japan smashed flat. This inviolability of the US has, of course, been dealt with in many sci-fi, fantasy and military fictional outings. I have mentioned many of them over the many posts I have made. From the weirdness of S. M. Stirlings' 'Dies the Fire', of a cosmic event, or Alien Space Bats as the author says, to the German invasion of America in Robert Conroys' '1901', we seen the US in dire peril. Stories like this are not new and we can thank H. G. Wells for one of the first USA apocalypse novels. In 1908 he published 'The War in the Air', which showed a pre WWI attack by Imperial Germany on a wholly unprepared United States. Using the technology of the times, he postulated a devastating Zeppelin attack that ripped New York apart and set off a chain of events that laid all civilization low. Remember, in 1908, the aeroplane was no more that a new and possibly fading fad and the future looked set for the airship. In addition, at that time, the German army was seen as one of the most professional and best trained after the British armed forces. I recall seeing some footage from a film of the book from 1919, but I can't seem to find anything now. Anyway, the point is that there is yet another book coming (available in Australia now) that takes the USA to a totally differet place - literally. I understand that the premise of the book is that the USA just vanishes (?) and the world is left without the bastion of democracy or The Great Satan, depending on your views and beliefs. I am waiting to read 'Without Warning' as soon as I can - Mr. Birmingham's books are well written and researched and keep you turning the pages.
