Lakes, Mountains and Stones

Some Are Lakes
Land Of Talk
Some Are Lakes/ Secret City Records

Lead vox Liz Powell has been asked into the Broken Social Scene camp and the Montreal based band will open for the BSS on tour. I wasn't too impressed with their Hillside set but on this song they come across as Sarah Harmer fronting the Constantines.  (Which is really stinkin' good).

I Hate My Friends
Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains
S/T /Outside Records

"Working too hard selling nothing/ Nothing is wrong/ We never knew 'til we ran out of hope". One time DFA1979 Seb Grainger has released his solo work. This glam rocker which features Leon Taheny (last heard of in the Germans) on drums and a barrage of guitar has me hooked.

Blood From A Stone
The Olympic Symphonium
More In Sorrow Than In Anger/ Forward Music Group

Think Hands In My Pocket from Jim Guthrie which was used in the Capital 1 commercial but have it sang by the Great Lake Swimmers and then call in Dale Murray of Cuff The Duke for some signature pedal steel work and Catherine MacLellan for backup vox. The OS are three guys from New Brunswick, Nick Cobham, Kyle Cunjak and Graeme Walker, who have some pedigree in East Coast bands and many pals. It shows. Its a quiet easy listen, a deep lake on a still day.

About Will McGuirk

  • Will_McGuirk
    • William McGuirk believes that Canadian music will not feed the world but it will provide moments of digestive relief. Tears are not enough but sometimes that's all we have. That we are not here for a long time so have a good time and support local artists. He has been yelling in the wilderness for 15 years. He needs a home and has been dewormed. He's got 6,000 years of Irish in him so don't believe a word of it.
